Fiona Pears – Fire & Light (2008)

Good evening guys! In today's review I looked up for some music that had to help me through my sick day. Needed something that will not kill me with heavy beats or riffs. So I decided to find some peaceful and calming music. I found extremely talented New Zealand's artist Fiona Pears and her album Fire & Light. What was interesting to me that almost all the music was written and composed by her so it was my actual first time to listening a modern Classical music (as strange it sounds, that what it is).
Fiona Pears started her career when she was twelve and since then she’s been plying with countless groups, bands and orchestras. She went through a lot of different genres, from classical music to Celtic folk, Gipsy style, different sub genres of Jazz. But in the end she always wanted to create her original pieces and after many years she fulfilled that dream with Fire & Light where she wrote 12 original tracks and made arrangements to “Sabre Dance” (originally composed by Aram Khatchaturian) and “I Found New Baby” (originally created by Jack Palmer and Spencer Williams).
Classical music has this distinguish feature in my head that I see it as a whole, I can’t just divide albums on smaller parts focusing on individual tracks. For me in contrary to other genres it is a one long story that composer wanted to put together. And Fiona, with her talent, did exactly this. From “Tangissimo” to “Saying Goodbye” it is almost a seamless journey I and my mind enjoyed through difficult day. Violin is a main instrument that builds all the melodies and led me through more than 50 minutes of music. What is worth noticing, as Fiona had her influences from different genres, I found a lot of elements that tick out and do not sit as a typical classical music element. Guitar, folk instruments and many other that helped build unique vibes as spread all over album. And that was, I think, the strongest point in the whole recording. Fiona with her talent was able to blend and create a fresh mix of music, even in an a bit of unpopular genre like classical music. It is refreshing and shows that music in nowadays can surprise, it just a matter of talent and thoughts of an artist. On Fire & Light I found all the mixture of emotion that I could dream of. There are songs that are straight forward ballads, songs that are very much ready to be played on a folk parties (like “Memory of Home”). It is worth mentioning that two arrangements mentioned earlier are really good. My favourite will be Sabre dance as I knew this song already but in Fiona Pears versions they didn't loose any of the flavour and also gave me an energy boost I needed so badly today. Is also worth mentioning that whole album was recorded with the City of Prague Philharmonic.
Conclusion: Fire & Light was my remedy for today, I found when I needed and fulfilled its role as a bring back to life in an easy way you can thing. Fiona Pears is one of not too many artists in our times that can help you bring to a classical music and also help you discover a lot of other genres you probably never knew about. I’m happy that this album was my companion through this Sunday and now I can share it with you!

Sadao Watanabe – Morning Island (1979)

Hi guys! Usually when I do a research for my blog I decide to rely on blind luck. This time with some help of a friend from work I turned to Japan to discover some jazz music. Then album Morning Island by Sadao Watanabe emerged. After quick check on the Internet I realised that I’m about to hear a legendary musician that was playing on saxophone before even my parents were born! So I quickly dived into this album and learnt that there is a lot of beautiful music ahead of me. Sadao Watanbe is a Japanese multi instrumentalist who divided his time between his homeland and USA (he was a student in Boston Barkley's collage). Morning Island is a 42th (!) release by this great musician (he has more than 70 compilations and albums done!). So at the start I had a title song. And it couldn't be more beautiful! Sound is soothing, mellow with a flute that provides a lovely melody, if you are not in the mood after you woke up, try this song! I bet it will ease your nerves and help y...

Vangelis - Spiral (1977)

Hi folks! After a wee break I’m coming back with a new post. Today I want to present you someone who is very famous and there is no way you’ve never heard his work (like, really, no chance for that at all). But isn’t it something that shouldn’t be in Positive Reviews? Well, actually I think it should. Maybe Vangelis is a well-known figure in music world but his earlier stuff, is not. So I would like to talk to you about one of his first albums, and to be exact, third one: Spiral . Vangelis is a Greek composer who gave a wonderful music of Blade Runner (1994) and Chariots of Fire (1981) just to name two. But his discography is a massive collection and I was amazed when I dug deeper and saw in how many projects he contributed, how many albums and films scores he wrote. So when I started listening to Spiral I was very intrigued. This record contains only 5 tracks but they are very long pieces that take 39 minutes of music all together. I felt like I need to prepare my senses fo...

Howard Hewett – I commit to Love (1986)

Hello ladies and gents! Another Sunday and another portion of Positive Reviews coming! In today’s chapter I’ve decided to go in more R&B/Soul/Urban style. Once again I turned to blind luck and picked an album that was telling me absolutely nothing. I commit to Love is a first solo album of Howard Hewett. His career started in late 70's, when he joined a Grammy winners Shalamar. It was a take to rise for Howard as he established his voice well in earlier mentioned genres. When in 1985 this cult band split, young vocalist started his solo career. Only one year later his first album saw the daylight and very quickly won hearts of millions. Many of the song that appeared on the album went very high on different charts, a whole album went Platinum. This information gave me the idea that once again I chose right. I was very curious of what gem hides in these files I was about to stream from one of the music services. First song on the record - “Stay” - started with a dr...
