Will Downing – Emotions (2003)

Hi guys! In today's episode, I would like to take you back to 2003, when we still were under the R’n’B influence from the 90’s. In that year, Will Downing revealed his 10th album “Emotions”. When I read about this singer, I was surprised I’ve never heard about him. He launched his career in 1988, staying strong throughout the decades (he released his 21st album in 2018). So I was more than intrigued to discover some of his music. First song on the album, which was also a single, “A million ways” sets a tone for almost the whole album. Soothing and relaxing music, romantic lyrics, and warmness of Will’s voice give an authentic feel for slowing down and be close with your significant other. Toned tempo and vibe from previous millennium create classic R’n’B hit. “King of Fools” starts with perfect combinations of guitar and bass (which is in my opinion the most highlighted instrument on the whole record, kudos to all bass players who helped to record it!) and it is another soothing song. Most of the album is dedicated to more intimate moments between people. “Daydreaming” apart from once again great melody, brings a fantastic saxophone. It’s great that the whole album is not focused solemnly on Will. There is enough space to cherrish massive talent of musicians who contributed to this album (you can easily find who played on which instrument, so if you like one specific, go and explore these artists!). Songs “Falling in Love” and “Hey There Lonely Girl” keep the same tone as previous ones. More over, they explore further ballad style. Lyrics are full of emotions, hopes and needs. They can be a fantastic gateway for some unique moments that you want to spend with your partner. Also, what I found interesting, lyrics in “Emotions” are not trying to be build on rhymes. Will Downing shows that a powerful message in a song doesn't have to be always to this simple, rhyme, rule. Second half of the album starts with surprisingly dance influence “Rhythm of U & Me”. Chorus in this song invites you to rush on a dance floor and have some fun. I dare anyone who will stay like a rock hearing that song! “Beautiful to Me” is a samba that takes you once again in more romantic theme. Still very approachable, with dancing vibe. “Another sad story” and “Riding on the Cloud” get you back on the couch after two dancing tunes. These songs will fuse your feelings and let the mind relax a bit. I like the fact that “Emotions” keeps steady feel, that you can easily identify with. Last song, “Anything” for a moment brings some more electronic, 21st century R’n’B style but quickly gets back in the line and wraps this album with one more soothing song. Conclusion: Will Downing brought full of emotions and love to his 2003 album. He lets listeners to very easily jump in these notes and keeps you occupied for more than 45 minutes. If you are looking for some proper love songs, “Emotions” will bring a plethora of them!

Sadao Watanabe – Morning Island (1979)

Hi guys! Usually when I do a research for my blog I decide to rely on blind luck. This time with some help of a friend from work I turned to Japan to discover some jazz music. Then album Morning Island by Sadao Watanabe emerged. After quick check on the Internet I realised that I’m about to hear a legendary musician that was playing on saxophone before even my parents were born! So I quickly dived into this album and learnt that there is a lot of beautiful music ahead of me. Sadao Watanbe is a Japanese multi instrumentalist who divided his time between his homeland and USA (he was a student in Boston Barkley's collage). Morning Island is a 42th (!) release by this great musician (he has more than 70 compilations and albums done!). So at the start I had a title song. And it couldn't be more beautiful! Sound is soothing, mellow with a flute that provides a lovely melody, if you are not in the mood after you woke up, try this song! I bet it will ease your nerves and help y...

Badi Assad – Solo (1994)

Hello folks! With today’s review I will take you and myself to a land of beautiful classic guitar. We move to 1994 when a fantastic multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Badi Assad showed her unique style. She came from a musical family , where father and brothers also indulge themselves in a world of music. Solo is a sophomore album, after her debut  Danca do Tons . It starts with surprising silence but soon we can taste tat almost an hour of music will be magical. Her playing technique, original way to lay classical guitar, gives a lot of emotions that strike through album. “Num Pagode Em Planaltina” is filled with small details that will keep you interested. Pristine recording (don’t forget that in th e se times there was no software like a DAW that could help with recording and mixing, old school a l l the way!) sounds just beautiful. Every stroke, every tap, every mute is full of life. With good quality speakers you c ould feel like she was sitting next to you. In “A Bel...

Recoil – Hydrology (1988)

Good evening folks! After choosing “Hydrology” as my another album for Positive Reviews, I wasn't aware how much I still don’t know about the artist I like to listening. Recoil is a project which started with Alan Wilder demo. After I heard his name I was like: isn't it that guy from Depeche Mode? I dived quickly to Wikipedia to find out more about it and I was right! This name rang a bell just quite right but I was in shock. How could I pass on his work until this point? After getting myself back to normal I started to explore his album. And what did I discover? A lot of unexpecting moments that stayed deep into my head. But to not get ahead of myself let me take you slowly but firmly through these 3 songs that filled for more than 37 minutes (yep, This is not a joke). “Grain” is the first song and also the shortest one (barely 7 minutes and 44 seconds;) on this album. It starts with a grand piano sound that plays a perfect loop for some first couple of minutes, then other...
