The Delta Rhythm Boys – By Request (1971)

Hello everyone! Busy summer limited my time but finally I had some occasion to write a new post! Today we will move into a bit different direction and check a band that was a massive force in American soul music from late 50s up to 80s. American vocal group The Delta Rhythm Boys change their line-up extensively through the years they were active (apart from one member that was a cornerstone of that band for all years of their career). The album I will talk about today was a bit of a surprise for me but after first song I decided to stick with it and take a new turn with my blog. By Request is a cover alum that contains 10 songs from a various pop artists. First song “If I were a rich men” is a soul version of that ultimate classic song that was written by Jerry Brock for a multi award winning musical “Fiddler on the roof”. So when I started to hear well known melody I turned all my ears to my speakers to discover what this band has to offer. I know that this is unorthodox way ...

Vangelis - Spiral (1977)

Hi folks! After a wee break I’m coming back with a new post. Today I want to present you someone who is very famous and there is no way you’ve never heard his work (like, really, no chance for that at all). But isn’t it something that shouldn’t be in Positive Reviews? Well, actually I think it should. Maybe Vangelis is a well-known figure in music world but his earlier stuff, is not. So I would like to talk to you about one of his first albums, and to be exact, third one: Spiral . Vangelis is a Greek composer who gave a wonderful music of Blade Runner (1994) and Chariots of Fire (1981) just to name two. But his discography is a massive collection and I was amazed when I dug deeper and saw in how many projects he contributed, how many albums and films scores he wrote. So when I started listening to Spiral I was very intrigued. This record contains only 5 tracks but they are very long pieces that take 39 minutes of music all together. I felt like I need to prepare my senses fo...

Fiona Pears – Fire & Light (2008)

Good evening guys! In today's review I looked up for some music that had to help me through my sick day. Needed something that will not kill me with heavy beats or riffs. So I decided to find some peaceful and calming music. I found extremely talented New Zealand's artist Fiona Pears and her album Fire & Light . What was interesting to me that almost all the music was written and composed by her so it was my actual first time to listening a modern Classical music (as strange it sounds, that what it is). Fiona Pears started her career when she was twelve and since then she’s been plying with countless groups, bands and orchestras. She went through a lot of different genres, from classical music to Celtic folk, Gipsy style, different sub genres of Jazz. But in the end she always wanted to create her original pieces and after many years she fulfilled that dream with Fire & Light where she wrote 12 original tracks and made arrangements to “Sabre Dance” (originally c...

Howard Hewett – I commit to Love (1986)

Hello ladies and gents! Another Sunday and another portion of Positive Reviews coming! In today’s chapter I’ve decided to go in more R&B/Soul/Urban style. Once again I turned to blind luck and picked an album that was telling me absolutely nothing. I commit to Love is a first solo album of Howard Hewett. His career started in late 70's, when he joined a Grammy winners Shalamar. It was a take to rise for Howard as he established his voice well in earlier mentioned genres. When in 1985 this cult band split, young vocalist started his solo career. Only one year later his first album saw the daylight and very quickly won hearts of millions. Many of the song that appeared on the album went very high on different charts, a whole album went Platinum. This information gave me the idea that once again I chose right. I was very curious of what gem hides in these files I was about to stream from one of the music services. First song on the record - “Stay” - started with a dr...

Father John Misty – I love you, Honeybear (2015)

Hello guys! I hope you had a good week and you are ready for some new music for your ears! This week I’ve got acquainted with a very unique music from Father John Misty. My colleague from work suggested to check his work and album I love you, H oneybear quickly jumped on my speakers. As soon as I started to play the title song I was enjoying it. Father John Misty is a pseudonym of Josh Tillman. This 38 year-old musician/producer has started his career in 2004 and since then he’s been working with many artist across whole USA. The album we talk about today is a second under Father John Misty moniker. All song are very approachable and are combination of folk, rock and electronic music. Many tunes could be without an effort on top of many charts, not only in the United States. You can’t say a bad word about level of production and craftsmanship of this album. All beats sound crispy, guitars are warm and sloted perfectly with other instruments. Josh Tilman’s vocal is warm and ...

Invisible Limits – Demand for Supply (1987)

Invisible Limits – Demand for Supply (1987) Hello ladies and gentlemen! Today I want to take you for a trip around music style that exploded on the curve of synth era: Coldwave and Darkwave. Looking for my inspirations I spent some time on drinks with Dj Vilkas who suggested this turn. So we picked a band that was a completely mystery to me and I dived into Demand for Supply, debut album of German synth band Invisible Limits. Quick glance on the Internet shows that this band is still active! I was hyped straight away. If they still play it means their music has to be good. When I finally found some time (and clear my head from previous night with my friend) I sat relaxed and opened my ears to what was coming next. “Thoughts” grabbed me on the spot. A fantastic beat at the start with some dark vibe (something I was always looking forward). Then vocal of Marion Küchenmeister surprised me. Strong and powerful. With also a dark twist. All elements: keys, synth, drums, FX was ge...

Rão Kyao - Fado Bailado (1983)

When I was on mu trip to Lisbon, walking at the evening with family and friends through Alfama district, from one of the small restaurants I heard for the first time Fado, unique folk music straight from this beautiful country. Then it hit me, I should go and search for some fado musicians and write about it. On my way back I made my choice: Rão Kyao and his Fado Bailando became my next album to listen. There is not so much (at least not in English) information about this artist. What I could find about about him this he travelled far and tried to connect Portuguese folk music with eastern sound of Asia (like India). He also had a lot of influences from Jazz music. Usually I’m going through most songs individually, this record I will treat differently. It has this unchained soul this swiftly goes from one track to another. And in this way I should treat this piece from Rão Kyao, as a seamless flowing music. What caught me at the start is a saxophone. Rão quickly mastered this ins...
